Uche Fuels Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden continental adventure, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Missing star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another victory in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the last 16, especially following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their league season were outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple tap-in.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the referee waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
