The megacity Awakens to Dangerous Haze After Festival of Lights

Tuesday brought citizens of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" category.

Record-Breaking Pollution Readings

Several parts of the city showed an AQI above 500, which represents ten times the recommended limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of 1800, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable levels.

Firecracker Ban and Recent Developments

For the past four years, the government had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season sets in.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership petitioned the supreme court to request a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only about 30% less polluting – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".

Court Ruling and Enforcement

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, the court complied with the appeal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during specific time windows throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was extensive flouting of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout Delhi showed contamination spiking around late evening to extremely hazardous levels seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Consequences

The widespread use of firecrackers during Diwali also initiated a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from across the border following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated readings of air contamination in Delhi have continued as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation gradually deteriorating.

Near the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particles in the air has been found to spike to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly regarded as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Various Pollution Factors

The situation in the city is resulting from a mix of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating hazardous haze that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air sets in.

Health and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million people living in the capital region is substantial, according to various studies.

The contaminated air causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can potentially cause malignancies.

The pollution is projected to be responsible for ten thousand early fatalities per year in the city.
