Minister Says MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Told to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.

A defence minister has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese cars, while staff have been advised to avoid discussing secret information in all cars.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

During a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made cars.

He said that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Security Context

The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

The broader defence situation highlights the importance of robust protocols and caution in every areas of official activities, from vehicle usage to communication practices.
