Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
