European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
