2K Hires Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Management Shift Follows Lukewarm Feedback

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last autumn.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a more defined vision.

Ismailer stated that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to address gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the complete content from Ismailer's memo:

Team—

I understand you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Last time I shared you all a update, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to continue.”

Given your hard work and versatility, particularly over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the need for a clearer identity.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You embraced the criticism to mind and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our audience.

The belief in this project grows every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the latest Lead of 31st Union. After several months of conversations, Ben officially joins us on next week.

His leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in greeting him in the coming days. We are all looking forward to keep observing the evolution of the game in the months to come.

The President

Background of the New Head

Brinkman presently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the genre."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the official summary states. "Challenge the opponents with new abilities, risks, and obstacles that evolve every session. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Or take a risk, risk it all, and hope your group can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."

Project Ethos does not have an announced debut schedule or platforms, but enthusiasts can anticipate more updates as development continues.
